President welcomes students
Welcome to 91³ÉÈ˵¼º½ and the Fall Term. All of us at the College are excited about your arrival!†Whether you are new or returning, I?d like to remind you of a few things before classes begin on Monday:
91³ÉÈ˵¼º½ open Saturday, Aug. 25 until noon
††91³ÉÈ˵¼º½ (main campus student services) will be open from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Aug. 25 to assist students needing to complete the registration process for the fall semester.
91³ÉÈ˵¼º½ Honors students begin work on historical film
††The 91³ÉÈ˵¼º½ Honors students got a head start on their semester last week as they traveled to Jefferson to film their second feature-length movie.
††The students are currently in the process of producing a 38-scene film on the life of Morris Sheppard, a native of Morris County.†Sheppard authored the 18th amendment and is known as the father of prohibition.
††The year 2013 will mark the 100th anniversary of Sheppard's drive for the prohibition amendment in Congress.
91³ÉÈ˵¼º½ to offer free GED classes in Mount Pleasant
The Adult Education Department at 91³ÉÈ˵¼º½ will offer free General Education Development (GED) classes in Mount Pleasant.†Both day and evening classes are available.†91³ÉÈ˵¼º½ interested in attending classes must enroll in a 12-hour orientation. Orientation and classes will be held at the Adult Education Center located in Room 126 of the Mount Pleasant ISD Administration Building at 105 N. Riddle. †The day orientation will be September 4-6 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and classes begin September 10.
Whatley Center announces 2012-2013 season
††The Whatley Center for the Performing Arts at 91³ÉÈ˵¼º½ recently announced the lineup for the 2012-2013 season. Individual ticket sales begin Monday, Aug. 20. Season ticket packages are also available.
††"We have scheduled some amazing shows for our upcoming year of entertainment. I strongly recommend that people purchase tickets well in advance.
Summer Academic Achievements
91³ÉÈ˵¼º½ is pleased to recognize students who excelled academically in Summer 2012. To be named to the Academic Honors list, a student must have taken 12 or more hours and earned at least a 3.5 grade point average. To be named to the Special Academic Merit List, a student must have taken between seven and 11 hours and earned a 4.0 grade point average.
91³ÉÈ˵¼º½ graduates 148 students at summer commencement
91³ÉÈ˵¼º½ held its summer 2012 commencement ceremony at the Whatley Center for the Performing Arts on Friday, Aug. 10. During the ceremony, 82 students were awarded associate degrees and 66 earned certificates of competency in their chosen fields. Cory Nesbitt, a 2003 graduate of 91³ÉÈ˵¼º½ who is now a mechanical engineer for NASA, gave the commencement address. Nesbitt is a native of Mount Pleasant and graduated from Mount Pleasant High School. Pictured above, Carlos Mendez, of Mount Pleasant, gives the student response as his classmates look on.
Submissions requested for Northeast Texas Poetry Contest
††Submissions are now being accepted for the fifth annual Northeast Texas Poetry Contest. Poems about our region of Northeast Texas are due to Dr. Andrew Yox, 91³ÉÈ˵¼º½ Professor and Honors Director,†by Friday, August 24 at noon. Poems should be e-mailed to ayox@ntcc.edu.
††The contest includes both a student and adult category and cash awards will be given.
Pleasant Sams give $500 91³ÉÈ˵¼º½ scholarship
The 91³ÉÈ˵¼º½ Foundation recently received a $500 scholarship from the Pleasant Sams, the Mount Pleasant Chapter of the Good Sams Club of America. This year's gift will benefit a student studying in the Carroll Shelby Automotive Technology program at 91³ÉÈ˵¼º½. 91³ÉÈ˵¼º½ offers free GED, ESL classes
The Adult Education Department at 91³ÉÈ˵¼º½ will offer free General Education Development (GED) classes and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes at various locations throughout the area. All students must in enroll in an orientation session before beginning classes.
